Literacy Kits help Jeff Davis Parish students bring the joy of reading and learning home to their families

Lake Charles, LA— United Way Southwest Louisiana recently delivered Literacy Kits to kindergarten and third-grade students at Hathaway High School in Jeff Davis Parish, providing young learners with resources designed to make reading and learning fun both in the classroom and at home.

The Literacy Kit program is part of United Way Southwest Louisiana’s ongoing commitment to helping children develop strong literacy skills and encouraging families to make reading a part of everyday life.

While the Literacy Kits are introduced to students in the classroom, their impact is designed to extend far beyond the school day. Each student takes their kit home, giving them an opportunity to continue learning and share the experience with parents, siblings and other family members.

“Reading together at home is one of the simplest ways families can support a child’s learning,” said Denise Durel, President and CEO of United Way Southwest Louisiana. “These Literacy Kits give students something that belongs to them, while also creating an opportunity for the entire family to be part of their learning experience.”

By putting age-appropriate literacy resources directly into students' hands, United Way Southwest Louisiana aims to help build confidence, strengthen reading skills and encourage a lifelong love of learning.

The delivery to Hathaway High School is part of United Way Southwest Louisiana’s broader work to support education and literacy throughout Southwest Louisiana. Through partnerships with local schools, educators, volunteers and community supporters, United Way works to ensure children have access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.

United Way Southwest Louisiana thanks the teachers and staff at Hathaway High School for welcoming the Literacy Kit program into their kindergarten and third-grade classrooms and for their continued commitment to students in Jeff Davis Parish.
